The History of American Baby Names: A Century of SSA Data
Where This Data Actually Comes From
The Social Security Administration has issued Social Security numbers to virtually every child born in the United States since the program's early decades, and each application records the child's first name and sex. That administrative process, not a survey or a marketing dataset, is the actual source of the baby name records used throughout this site. It's why the numbers here are counts of real recorded births, not estimates.
This site's library holds 343,588,970 individual name records spanning 1923 through 2025, covering 104,414 unique names. That scale is the point: a single year's ranking is a snapshot, but a century of them is a record of how an entire country's naming habits actually moved.
The Name That Ruled Longest
In 1923, the first year in this dataset, Mary was the #1 girls' name in the country with 71,634 recorded births. It held that position for decades. By 1950 it was still #2, with 65,481 births. Then the decline set in: by 1975 it had fallen to #19, by 2000 to #46, and by 2025 to #125, with 2,230 births. No single event caused that slide; it's the cumulative effect of naming fashion diversifying across a century, one small shift at a time.
Compare that to Linda, which spent most of the 1930s outside the top 150 before a genuinely explosive rise: by 1947 it was the #1 girls' name in the country with 99,692 births in a single year, driven in large part by a hit song of the same name released that year. By 1955 it had already fallen to #3. By 1990 it was down to #175. By 2025 it sat at #902, with just 294 births. Few names in this dataset rise and fall that fast, which is what makes it a useful case study in how quickly a boom-era name can look dated.
Two Boys' Names, Two Different Centuries
John and Michael show that a "classic" boys' name can lose ground in two very different ways. John was the #1 boys' name in this dataset's very first year, 1923, with 57,467 births. It never spiked and it never crashed — it just eroded, steadily, for a full century: #3 by 1940, #4 by 1960 (even as total U.S. births were rising sharply), #8 by 1980, #14 by 2000, and #23 by 2025 with 8,027 births. A century-long, almost uninterrupted decline — the naming equivalent of a slow leak rather than a puncture.
Michael's arc is the opposite shape. It wasn't a major name at all in 1923, ranking #50 with just 3,915 births. It then became the single most dominant boys' name of the postwar era, holding #1 from at least 1955 through 1995 — a run of four straight decades that included a peak of 88,355 births in 1955 alone. When it finally lost the top spot, it went fast: #2 by 2005, #9 by 2015, and #21 by 2025 with 8,094 births — a name that once stood almost unrivaled now sitting at roughly the same count as John, the name it had displaced generations earlier.
Put side by side, John and Michael make the same point from opposite directions: a name's total lifespan in this dataset can span the full century, but no name here — however dominant at its peak — has held the very top spot indefinitely. The real measure of a lasting "classic" isn't that it stays #1. It's that, unlike a Linda or a Michael, it never fully disappears.
Why the Records Start When They Do
Name records become reliable once Social Security number registration was close to universal for newborns, which is why this dataset, like most public ones, begins in the early-to-mid 20th century rather than reaching further back. Earlier name popularity has to be estimated from other historical sources, which are far less complete, so we don't include them here rather than presenting a guess as data.
What a Century of Data Is Actually Good For
The value of a long dataset isn't any single year's ranking — it's being able to place a name in its full arc. Mary's century-long slide, Linda's decade-long boom-and-bust, John's slow erosion, and Michael's four-decade reign followed by a fast fall are four completely different shapes, and none of them would be visible from a single year's top-10 list.
