How Baby Name Trends Rise and Fall: What the Data Shows

The Shapes a Trend Can Take

Looking across the full dataset, name trends tend to take one of a few recurring shapes: a slow climb followed by a slow decline, a sharp spike followed by a fast collapse, or a fast rise into a multi-year plateau at the very top before a rapid fall. Most classic names fall into the first category. A smaller number of names — usually tied to a specific cultural moment, a genuinely broad shift in taste, or both — fall into the second or third.

A Sharp-Spike Case Study: Linda

Linda is the clearest example of the spike-and-collapse pattern in this dataset. In 1935 it ranked #165 among girls' names, with 1,197 births that year. By 1947 it had rocketed to #1, with 99,692 births — roughly an 83-fold increase in twelve years. It held #3 by 1955, but the fall was almost as fast as the rise: by 1970 it had dropped to #38, and by 1990 to #175. Names that spike this hard rarely stay near the top for more than a decade.

A Slow-Climb Case Study: Olivia

Olivia shows the opposite pattern. In 1995 it ranked #39 among girls with 7,627 births. It climbed steadily rather than spiking: #16 in 2000, #5 in 2005, #4 in 2010, #2 in 2015, and #1 by 2020, a position it still held in 2025 with 13,544 births. That's a 30-year climb with no single dramatic jump — the kind of trend that tends to be more durable than a spike, because it isn't tied to one moment that will eventually stop feeling current.

A Fast-Modern Climb: Liam

Liam offers a middle case. It wasn't ranked in the boys' top 100 as recently as 2005, but by 2010 it had entered the rankings at #30 with 10,933 births, then jumped to #2 by 2015 and #1 by 2020, a position it still held in 2025 with 20,818 births. That's a top-spot finish in roughly a decade — fast for a name with no single obvious pop-culture trigger, and a reminder that not every rapid climb needs one.

The Long Reign: Jacob

Jacob shows a third shape entirely: a fast rise into a multi-year plateau at #1, followed by a fall nearly as steep as the climb. It ranked #20 among boys in 1990 with 22,022 births, climbed to #4 by 1995, and reached #1 in 1999 with 35,371 births. Unlike Michael's four-decade reign at the top (see our guide to a century of American baby names), Jacob's run wasn't quite that long — but it was still remarkably durable for a modern name, holding #1 through at least 2012, thirteen years later, with 19,110 births that year.

Then the fall came quickly: #4 by 2015, #15 by 2020, and #43 by 2025 with just 6,152 births — roughly a sixth of its peak count in under fifteen years. If you're looking at a name that's already reached #1 and wondering whether that makes it "safe" from feeling dated later, Jacob's pattern is a useful caution: reaching the very top and staying there for over a decade didn't protect it from a fast decline once the decline started.

What This Means If You're Choosing a Name Right Now

A name currently climbing fast, the way Liam did in the 2010s, carries more risk of feeling generationally dated in ten years than a name that's climbed slowly over decades, like Olivia, or a name that's been broadly stable for generations. A name that's already spent several years at #1, like Jacob did, isn't automatically safer either — Jacob's steep fall after 2012 shows a long reign can still end quickly. None of these patterns is objectively better than another; it depends on whether you want a name that reads as unmistakably current for your child's specific generation, or one whose popularity trajectory is harder to predict from where it stands today.

The practical way to tell these shapes apart before committing to a name is to pull up its trend on the year browser and look at more than one data point. A name sitting at, say, #15 today could be Liam in 2010 (about to climb into the top spot within five years), Jacob in 2015 (four years past its own peak and already sliding), or John in almost any recent year (a name that has simply settled into a long, shallow decline with no dramatic move in either direction). The rank alone won't tell you which one you're looking at — the shape of the line over the last ten to fifteen years will.

It's also worth remembering that these four case studies were chosen because they show clean, unambiguous shapes. Most names in this dataset are messier — a few years of gains followed by a plateau, then a small dip, then gains again. Don't expect every name you look up to fit neatly into "spike," "climb," or "plateau." The value of knowing these shapes exist is recognizing one when it does appear, not forcing every name's trend line into one of the four.
