Understanding Name Popularity Rankings: What the Numbers Actually Mean
Rank and Count Are Different Numbers
A name's rank tells you its position relative to every other name that year. Its count tells you the actual number of recorded births. These move together most of the time, but not always, and confusing them leads to bad conclusions.
Take Olivia in 2015 and 2025. In 2015 it ranked #2 with 19,729 births. In 2025 it ranked #1 — a step up in rank — but with only 13,544 births, a drop of over 6,000. Olivia's rank improved because other names fell faster than it did, not because Olivia itself became more popular in absolute terms. Overall birth counts and naming diversity both shifted across that decade, so rank comparisons across distant years always deserve a second look at the underlying count.
A Rank Outside the Top 100 Still Has a Real Count
Most published "top baby names" lists stop at 100, which makes a name look nonexistent in a given year if it's not on the list. It usually isn't nonexistent — it just has a smaller count. Khaleesi, for example, doesn't appear in most top-100 lists for any year, but the underlying SSA records show 28 recorded births in 2011, climbing to 470 by 2017. A name can be real, trackable, and rising fast while still sitting well outside any top-100 list.
Why a Century-Old #1 and Today's #1 Aren't the Same Thing
Comparing a #1 name from 1923 to a #1 name from 2025 sounds like a fair comparison — same rank, same country — but the underlying pool of names in circulation has changed dramatically. In 1923, this dataset records 2,302,468 total births spread across 9,540 unique names. By 2000, total births had grown to 3,780,037, but the number of unique names in use had grown far faster still, to 27,521 — nearly tripling relative to the modest growth in births. Even in 2025, with total births slightly lower at 3,315,343, unique names sat at 28,638, roughly three times the diversity of 1923.
That shift matters because a #1 name today is being chosen out of a much larger, more fragmented field than a #1 name in 1923 was. John's 57,467 births in 1923 came from a pool of 9,540 competing names; a name can reach #1 today with a far smaller raw count simply because there are three times as many names splitting a similar overall number of births. A modern #1 ranking reflects a name standing out in a genuinely more crowded field — even when its raw birth count looks smaller than a decades-old #1's did.
How Steeply Count Drops as Rank Increases
It's tempting to assume rank moves in even steps — that the gap between #1 and #5 is roughly the same as the gap between #50 and #54. The actual 2023 data shows it doesn't work that way. Among girls' names that year, #1 (Olivia) had 15,329 births and #5 (Sophia) had 11,999 — a drop of about 22% across four positions. By #10 (Luna), the count was down to 7,853, roughly half of #1. From there the curve flattens out: #25 (Aria) had 6,024, #50 (Valentina) had 4,090, #75 (Autumn) had 3,011, and #100 (Allison) had 2,650 — the gap between #75 and #100 is barely 361 births, a fraction of the gap between #1 and #10.
Boys' names the same year show the identical shape: #1 (Liam) at 20,904 births falling to #10 (William) at 10,673 — again roughly halved in the first ten spots — before leveling off toward #100 (Gael) at 3,629. The lesson: moving from #1 to #10 represents a genuinely enormous difference in real popularity, while moving from #75 to #100 barely matters in absolute terms, even though both represent a 25-position shift. Treat a rank change near the top of a list very differently from the same-sized rank change further down it.
How to Read a Ranking Without Over-Interpreting It
A single year's rank is a snapshot of one birth cohort in one country. It says nothing about a name's popularity among adults today, in other countries, or in your specific city or community. The most reliable way to use this data is to look at the trend across several years rather than any single year's number, and to keep the shrinking-pie effect and the steep top-of-list curve described above in mind whenever you're comparing ranks — which is exactly what the rest of the guides on this site try to do.
Taken together, these three habits — checking count alongside rank, remembering that a name outside the top 100 still has a real and trackable count, and accounting for how the size and diversity of the naming pool has shifted over time — are the difference between reading this site's data accurately and reading it the way a generic "top baby names" list encourages you to, which is to treat rank as if it were the whole story.
